10 Contemporary Songs You Would Hear on a MySpace Profile Page

In lieu of emerging genres and social media platforms, brat summer, cyberpop, indie sleaze, and Y2K styles in 2024, this feels fitting. In 2003, MySpace was the original form of social media, think even before Facebook. It was the most visited site on the internet in 2006, allowing users to post music, videos, photos, and memos. Sound familiar?

Let's bring it back to the rise of MySpace in 2005 and its rapid decline in 2010, when new social media platforms like Facebook emerged. This was a time when most millennials curated their profiles to fit the angst and feelings of a preteen or teenager in the early 2000s with a song representative of their aura. Featured songs then Include "Deceptacon" Le Tigre, "Stars are Blind" by Paris Hilton, "Big Girls Don't Cry" by Fergie, "Le Disko" by Shiny Toy Guns, and "Crimewave" by Crystal Castles. Here are ten contemporary songs that would definitely have been on any MySpace profile page back in '05. MySpace, YourSpace, Ourspace... away we go.

"Everything is romantic" - Charli xcx

The most relevant song goes first, obviously. Charli xcx's album is the epitome of cyber pop taking the internet by storm this summer. Trends began, the album has been on Billboard charts for 12 weeks, and sales skyrocketed. The song was dubbed by podcasters Enya Umanzor and Drew Phillips from Emergency Intercom. Notable mention; it was indeed a "brat summer."

"Fall in love again and again"

"Juliet" - Cavetown

"Juliet" tells a love story. The main character deals with the tribulations of love while struggling with depression. He wants to be there for Juliet, but he has to deal with the bully in his head first. With its acoustic guitar and hypnotizing harmonies, as well as its electronic undertones, the song has the sad boy feel that so many early 2000s favorites reveal as well.

"I hope that she looks at me and thinks, 'Shit he's so pretty.'"

"HOT TO GO!" - Chappell Roan

Popstar Chappell Roan took this past summer by storm with her interactive tune "HOT TO GO!", prompting audience members to join her in "YMCA" fashion. She does this by doing a brief demonstration of the dance with voice accompaniment before she performs it, so that the entirety of the audience is on the same page. As far as MySpace goes, this song fits almost perfectly to a profile's aesthetic and the aesthetic of the time.

"H - O - T - T - O - G - O, you can take me hot to go."

"Venus Fly"- Grimes feat. Janelle Monáe

What a refreshing couple. R&B goddess Janelle Monáe matched with the eccentric and vibrant Grimes is the duo I never knew I needed. The two came together to create a tune adhering to Grimes' appeal. It was interesting to here Monàe on the track for this specific reason, as it's not her norm, but the two blend perfectly despite their musical differences. Electronic and dance were among prominent emerging genres in the early 2000s, so Grimes fits right into this playlist.

"Yeah, Grimes got my back."

"t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l" - WILLOW, feat. Travis Barker

Another refreshing duo. WILLOW, typically known for her celestial nature and being Will and Jada Smith's daughter launched "t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l", a tune with an edgy, punk feel. People created memes after this tune was launched, as she effectively stepped into her emo era. WILLOW's musical career provides range and undoubted talent, both of which shine through in "t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l". When you think of early 2000s rock, you might think of Blink-182. Travis Barker drumming behind WILLOW's vocals are the recipe for success.

"I can see right through, just so you know. Transparent soul."

"Hop Hop Hop" - horsegiirL & MCR-T

German DJ and singer horsegiirL, alongside MCR-T, produces an uptempo and fast-paced song bound to make one dance (or hop)... or want to turn off the song immediately. The overstimulating nature of the song is fitting because of its eccentricity. Solely in German, the song is about a child literally playing with a horse. "Hop Hop Hop"'s playful energy lives in its lyrics and pace.

"Hop, hop, hop, Pferdchen lauf Galopp" (Hop, hop, hop, little horse run gallop)."

"20191009 I Like Her" - Mac Demarco

One of the defining characteristics of a MySpace profile song is its subliminal messaging. People oftentimes used the music feature to send a message to their frequent profile visitors. Users were able to see who else was online at the same time as they were. The feature was often used to strategically capture a special someone's eye. You couldn't be anymore obvious about your feelings than with this tune.

"Long as she's there beside me, life could be so good."

"Why Are Sundays So Depressing" - The Strokes

The Strokes are among the biggest musical pioneers of the alternative rock and indie scene. In their 2020 album, The New Abnormal, The Strokes brought their nostalgic early 2000s feel to 2020. It brought people back to their 2001 debut, Is This It, with their stylistic catchiness and matching color scheme for the album art. Oh, the nostalgia.

"My baby's gone, but I don't miss her."

"Crushcrushcrush" - Coco and Clair Clair feat. Paul Maxwell

To not put Coco and Clair Clair in the lineup would be a major disservice to this article. Coco and Clair Clair have a dreamy aesthetic combining pop and rap. Similarly to tunes in the MySpace era, they incorporate sassy and playful lyrics to their dreamy charm.

"Kind of look like a duck, but a b*tch like her quackin."

"New Bottega" - Torren Foot feat. Azealia Banks

In typical Azealia Banks fashion this song is sexy, diva-coded, fast, and makes you want to move. The song name-drops 12 designer brands and one luxury car brand. The lavish, luxurious, and extravagant nature of her music only adds to her iconic confidence. Banks has never been one to conform and made sure to exhibit that in this latest 2023 single, "New Bottega", with Torren Foot mixing the beats.

"Prada- da."
