Behind The Decks: Shogun Talks Live Sets, New Music, and Neo Tokyo Records

Shogun is the California-based DJ and producer to watch in 2024. Having headlined major music festivals such as Tomorrowland, ULTRA, and A State Of Trance, as well as being named in DJ Mag's Top 100 list four times, this talent is one you can't miss. First making waves in electronic music over the pandemic, Shogun began working with industry giants like Sony Music. An exclusive remix of the Super Mario Bros theme song on Bandcamp drew in profits that were donated to COVID-19 frontline healthcare workers.

How did you first become involved in the electronic music scene? At what age did you know you wanted to be a musician?

Growing up in the Midwest, specifically Ohio, my initial aspirations were aimed at becoming a professional tennis player.  However, around my junior and senior years in high school, I experienced burnout and lost my passion for tennis.  This shift led me to explore new avenues, and despite my parents' traditional expectations of pursuing a more conventional career, I found solace in music.  Although they initially wanted me to master the piano and violin, my heart was set on the drums and becoming a DJ.  Fast forward to my first nightclub experience at 18, where witnessing Tiesto perform ignited a spark, and I knew right then that I wanted to be a DJ and later, a DJ and producer.

Describe your sound in three words. How has it changed over time?

My sound can be described as emotional, melodic, and evolving.  Starting with a foundation in trance music, my style has transformed into a hybrid genre, blending deep progressive house with traces of trance elements.  This evolution allows me to tell stories through my music, resonating with listeners on an emotional level.  I actually just launched my very own record label, Neo Tokyo Records, with the goal of representing the sounds and styles that currently best represent my sonic vision.

Having rocked the stages of major festivals around the world, what is your favorite live performance memory?

Selecting a favorite live performance memory is challenging given the unique charm of each major festival like Ultra, Tomorrowland, and EDC.  However, the common thread among them is the rush and musical connection with the crowd.  Playing sets that leave a lasting impact on the audience is a constant highlight of my career.

How did your aliases, NXNJAS and Neo Tokyo, come about?

In 2022, I introduced two new aliases, NXNJAS and Neo Tokyo, each designed to showcase my diverse production capabilities while preserving the trance roots of the Shogun brand.  NXNJAS, a Brazilian bass and house project, emerged from a collaboration with a close friend and has gained support from none other than Tiesto.  Neo Tokyo, focusing on techno, trance, future rave, and big room, envisions the future of dance music, offering a glimpse into what the genre might evolve into by 2050.

Tell us about "The Neo Tokyo Radio Show". What is the most rewarding part of the project?

"The Neo Tokyo Radio Show" has become a significant outlet for me to showcase my musical range and connect with fans worldwide.  With 35 episodes available on YouTube, the most rewarding part is the opportunity to share my passion for music and create a platform where fans can immerse themselves in the diverse sounds of Neo Tokyo.

What inspired you to start your record label, Neo Tokyo Records?

The decision to launch Neo Tokyo Records was motivated by a desire to create a platform where I could curate and share my music with fans directly.  "Shut Up Now (Dance With Me)" serves as the maiden release from Neo Tokyo Records, signaling a promising start for this venture that aims to provide fans with a variety of captivating releases.

Share about your new single, "Shut Up Now (Dance With Me)". What was your creative and production process?

"Shut Up Now (Dance With Me)" is a track that invites everyone to hit the dance floor with its undeniable groove.  Clocking in at just over two minutes, the song expertly layers a fast-paced tempo over a soothing piano chord progression, creating a seamless dynamic between verses and hooks.  The creative process involved navigating transitions between moods effortlessly, culminating in an infectious high-energy vibe that is sure to have listeners hitting the replay button.  The track is available on all streaming platforms via Neo Tokyo Records.

What is one takeaway you want people to get from your music?

I want people to feel a connection to my music, to experience the emotions and stories woven into each track.  Whether it's the uplifting melodies or the infectious beats, I aim to create an immersive experience that resonates with listeners on a personal level.

What’s next for Shogun?

The journey ahead is filled with exciting projects and collaborations.  An upcoming collaboration with Öwnboss is set for release under Republic Records in January, promising a musical treat for fans.  Additionally, the release schedule is stacked with projects, including new music from Shogun, NXNJAS, and Neo Tokyo in 2024.

Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you?

Beyond the music, I'm an avid gamer, indulging in titles like League of Legends, Valorant, and retro games.  I'm also a collector, currently attempting to sell my 1992 Marvel Masterpiece card collection on eBay.  It's important to me to stay true to my passions and have fun along the way.

Who are three more artists or industry professionals you’d like to see on Enharmonic Magazine next?

I'd love to see artists like Salvatore Ganacci, Bob Marley (if he were still with us), and Dom Dolla featured on Enharmonic Magazine.  Each of them brings a unique perspective and has made significant contributions to their respective fields.
