The first time I saw Destroy Boys was at Riot Fest in 2022, and up until then I didn’t know much about their music. I definitely wasn’t expecting to discover what is now one of my favorite bands, or to watch one of the most incredible shows that I have ever seen. They are truly powerful, influential performers; in every song there is unbridled passion, rage, purpose, and determination. With unflinching, gritty guitar tones and a push for societal change, Destroy Boys is an essential punk band for every listener.
The group recently announced their upcoming album, Funeral Soundtrack # 4. Their first post in their unique marketing campaign to tease the album was a white screen reading “Destroy Boys 2015-2024”, implying that the band had broken up. However, the post included a link to funeralsoundtrack4.com, which revealed more information about the upcoming release, as well as an option to “attend the funeral”… or sign up for an email list to receive exclusive updates and view an enigmatic video teasing their new music.
“Should’ve Been Me” is the group's newest single off of the upcoming album and is a powerful, furiously energetic one-minute track. Despite its short length, it packs a serious punch, with aggressive and driven guitar riffs and ethereal yet formidable vocals. According to Rocksound, guitarist Violet Mayugba said when speaking on the single, “Should’ve Been Me’ is a one-minute embodiment of rage that was formed when I went through a serious breakup. When I found out my ex had been seeing someone else, I screamed like I had never screamed before, and that’s the voice you’re hearing.” This influence can be heard through lyrics such as “Jealous girl, and it's easy to see / That's why I'm gonna tell you that it should've been me” and “Terminal disease that begins in your skull / Wanna sick the violence on you, wanna eat till I'm full / Watch you try to run, I wanna hear you scream / Don't panic, I'll make the cut clean”. This violence and anger is evident in the instrumental ambience of the track as well as the vocals, which shift from raw screaming to unsettling and eerily calm spoken word.
"Jealous girl, and it's easy to see / That's why I'm gonna tell you that it should've been me”
Overall, “Should’ve Been Me” is an intense, adrenaline-powered song with energy that is palpable and irresistible. Funeral Soundtrack # 4 is set to be released on August 9th, and it is clear that this fourth album is sure to be their best yet.
