For the first time in 34 years, the '90s cult classic Jane’s Addiction has released new music. The Los Angeles-based group was one of the most influential alternative rock bands from the late '80s and early '90s and today is a household name amongst all music fans. They are best known for their unique blend of grunge and metal, with traces of early indie. Frontman Perry Farrell is likely the most recognizable of the quartet, not only as an iconic musician but also as the founder of the popular worldwide music festival, Lollapalooza.
Their new single “Imminent Redemption” was unveiled on July 24th, two months after the group debuted the song during a concert in London. Though Jane’s Addiction has been active within the past three decades, this is the first release with the original lineup of Farrell, drummer Stephen Perkins, guitarist Dave Navarro, and bassist Eric Avery.
The growling rock track opens with an uptempo bass line, soon ornamented with vocals and punching guitar that bursts the single open into a shower of energy. The first line sung by Farrell is “Let’s make some good trouble," highlighting the band's plan for their new era of music. “Imminent Redemption” is a great example of new music by a classic band: it maintains their traditional sound while building upon it, blending past and present into one track. The sharp, modern, and gritty guitar tone, texturized with piercing harmonics, blends perfectly with Avery’s aggressive bass tone and Perkins’ combative yet skillful drum work. As the track reaches the chorus, Farrell sings, “Let’s launch us a comeback," again underscoring the band’s reunion and the accompanying sense of revivification.
"Let’s launch us a comeback"
“It is different this time,” the band said, according to Revolver. “To have everyone back together, releasing new music. It’s time. Welcome to the next chapter of Jane’s Addiction. 'Imminent Redemption' is only the beginning.”
"Welcome to the next chapter of Jane’s Addiction. 'Imminent Redemption' is only the beginning.”
The band is going on tour next month alongside Love and Rockets, and it is safe to say that the future is looking bright. With the release of the scalding “Imminent Redemption,” Jane’s Addiction’s “comeback” has officially begun.
